Registration of Sino II

The implant Sino II has been registered in the country under the brand name Femplant. The contraceptive will be available at 54 MSS Service facilities across the country from the first quarter of 2011.

Subdermal Contraceptive Implant

Sino-implant (II) branded as FEMPLANT in Pakistan, is a subdermal contraceptive implant manufactured in China by Shanghai Dahua Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. The implant is a set of two flexible, cylindrical rods made of milky white, medical-grade, silicone elastomer. Each rod contains 75 mg of levonorgestrel, the active ingredient, for a total of 150 mg. Each rod is sealed inside a tube made of a colorless, transparent form of silicone elastomer. Both ends of each tube are sealed with a medical adhesive. The implant is inserted under the skin in the upper arm using a disposable trocar.

Sino-implant (II) has the same mechanism of action and amount of active ingredient as Jadelle. Like other contraceptive implants, Sino-implant (II) is one of the most highly effective contraceptive methods and has an annual pregnancy rate of less than 1%. The implants are currently labeled for four years of use. Results of 11 published clinical trials following about 20,000 women for up to seven years show Femplant to be safe and effective.

Sino-implant (II) has been available in China since 1994 and has been purchased for use in Indonesia over the past seven years. To date, more than seven million units of Sino-implant (II) have been distributed.

The current manufacturing facility opened in 2004 and was specifically designed and built to meet China Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards.

Contraceptive Implant

Marie Stopes Society Pakistan in collaboration with CSM Pakistan has registered Sino-implant (II) in Pakistan under the trade name FEMPLANT. MSI is seeking approval of Sino II in five additional countries. Pharm Access Africa Limited (PAALI), DKT International, Progyne, and WomanCare Global are moving forward with registrations in other countries.

Ongoing Product Quality Evaluation

Shanghai Dahua Pharmaceutical performs lot-release testing on each lot of Sino-implant (II) for acceptability prior to distribution. These tests are based on China’s SFDA-approved methods for levonorgestrel silicone elastomer implants and include tests for active ingredient identification, quantification, release, and product sterility. The manufacturer is committed to maintaining a quality manufacturing organization.

To provide additional assurance of the continued quality of Sino-implant (II), a five-year quality-evaluation monitoring program has been designed and is being implemented by Family Health International (FHI). The monitoring plan includes independent lot-release verification prior to distribution to Pakistan and an annual battery of tests to evaluate aspects of the levonorgestrel raw material, the final product, sterilization, and packaging components. This extensive evaluation of Sino-implant (II) uses standards and tests from the United States Pharmacopeia (USP), International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).

In parallel with the product-quality evaluation, a series of independent audits by qualified and trained auditors provides assurance of Shanghai Dahua Pharmaceutical’s compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices. These independent audits, in combination with successful inspections by drug regulatory authorities prior to approval, support Shanghai Dahua Pharmaceutical’s level of commitment to maintaining a quality manufacturing organization.

A CE-marked Disposable Trocar

Sino-implant (II) is supplied with a disposable trocar with a CE mark, which is a mandatory conformity mark for the distribution of this medical device in European Union Member States. A disposable trocar eliminates the need to clean the trocar by autoclaving after each use and facilitates service delivery in decentralized settings where electricity is not always available. Disposable trocars may be especially useful in mobile clinics.

INFO RE MSSPK TRAINING and MSI TRAINING

The MSS’ Training department set up in 1996 conducts comprehensive trainings and refreshers through its nine Medical Master Trainers for its service providers on a regular basis. The Training Department organizes courses professionally and systematically using standardized curricula, developed and finalized with close coordination of MSI’s Medical Development Team. The Training Department works in tandem with the Monitoring and Quality Assurance department ensuring all medical protocols and standards are being met and identified needs for training are effectively addressed.
